UNILAG - Asuu Threatens Strike Over Non Compliance Of Agreement

Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos chapter, Dr Adelaja Odukoya, has hinted that his members may embark on strike, if the institution’s management fails to implement the agreements reached with the union.
Disclosing that a rally had been scheduled to take place on Wednesday over the matter, the chairman listed some of the issues in dispute as irregularities in staff promotion process, method of professorial appointments, process of appointing heads of departments and the general welfare of academic staff.
He said: “Basically, the rally is to sensitise our members about the problems we face here. Since May, we have been engaging the management over some welfare issues, particularly the promotion of staff.
If things continue this way, we will be compelled to embark on a local strike. But we don’t want to do that and that is why we are bringing this to everybody’s attention, so they can understand what is going on in the institution.”
Speaking on what he called “notional promotion,” the chairman revealed that associate professors and professors, whose promotion were based on papers submitted two to four years earlier, had their appointments backdated without their arrears paid.
He further disclosed that the committee, which once reviewed this practice and resolved to correct it, was headed by Professor Rahamon Bello, before his appointment as vice chancellor.
“It is sad that he has refused to implement this when in fact he was the chairman of the committee which reviewed it”, Dr Odukoya stated.
He said the University of Lagos had adopted the principles of “No Ph.D, no promotion” and “No vacancy, no promotion,” both of which he described as ‘oppressive and discriminatory.’
“Ideally, a lecturer should be promoted up to the rank of Lecturer I without Ph.D, but here, there is no promotion at all. Some lecturers have remained Assistant Lecturers for eight years, simply because they do not have Ph.D”, Dr Odukoya said.
He said it was also their demand that heads of departments be chosen through elections rather than appointment by the vice chancellor.
“That is the only way we can hold them accountable”, he added.

Does Reading Makes You Smatter?

Modern societies have many opportunities to read varieties of books, which show to make people smarter. Today, many people can and have improved the way of thinking by just reading.

By saying reading, not only books are mentioned, but also newspapers, articles and magazines are included too. However, reading is a cognitive process of understanding a written linguistic message. Reading makes us smarter by improving analytic thinking and increasing vocabulary throughout your life.

Reading improves the way a person thinks. It improves your intellectual thinking. Intellectual thinking is a vital component of visual thinking that gives a person the ability to solve problems quickly and effectively. For example, when you read, you improve your general knowledge of the subject and things in particular, and more importantly you are able to spot patterns quicker.

If you can spot patterns quicker, your analytic or intellectual skills receive a boost. Intellectual thinking makes you smarter because it gives a new way to see problems.

Reading increases vocabulary. It’s no secret that reading increases your vocabulary and improves your spelling. But did you know that reading increases your vocabulary directly without being taught too? Reading forces us to look at words that we might not have seen or heard recently.

Every day, you’ll be surprised at the words you start incorporating into your mind, conversations and writings. Even when you get old, even when you have read lots of books, you’ll be impressed to see that you will always learn new words at the end of the day. Of course, this won’t happen if you don’t read.

Of no doubt, reading improves a person’s intelligence. It may take your time, but it improves your life by making you smarter. People, especially children may sometimes need to be pushed a little to read but in the end they will not be disappointed. If your definition of “smartness” is having a larger vocabulary and more knowledge and reasoning skills included within the concept of intelligence, then reading may make people smarter.

However, Charles William Eliot wrote “Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.”

Odd WorldAustralian Chef Kills And Cooks Girlfriend

Odd WorldAustralian Chef Kills And Cooks Girlfriend

Marcus Volke, a 28-year-old Australian chef, has killed and cooked his transgender girlfriend, Mayang Prasetyo, before killing himself in what has been described as the most hideous crime in the history of the country, the Australian police say.
According to Sky News, Marcus Volke was fleeing officers who had come to his Brisbane apartment after reports of a foul smell, when he slashed his own throat in a bin.
Police officers discovered body parts of Volke's girlfriend in a pot on the stove, while other parts of the Indonesian woman's mutilated body were found in garbage bins outside the apartment, according to local media.
Local media say the couple had moved into the recently opened apartment complex in the wealthy riverside suburb Teneriffe just weeks ago.
Volke had met his Mayang while they were both working on international cruise ships and had recently returned to Australia, his mother, Dorothy Volke said.
He was happy and he was coming home for Christmas, everything was normal.
Police said they were trying to establish the exact time of death. They arrived at the apartment when other residents in the complex said a rotting meat smell had pervaded the area.
Volke then fled through a glass door and leapt over a balcony and hid in an alleyway where he killed himself.
Resident Courtney Reichart told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, (ABC), that she first noticed the smell three days earlier and it got worse each day before the police were called.
I came out for a walk and the smell made your eyes water, it made you want to be sick. The smell was like as if somebody had put out some dog food or red meat and left it out for a few days.
It makes you feel sick that that poor girl sat there for however many days and we've been walking past, living our lives and thinking 'hmmm what's that smell', but you don't put two and two together. You don't think that a bad smell equals a murder.

Son From Hell - Teenager Murders Mother And Has Sex With Her Corpse

The world is really turning into the devil's playground, or how would one describe this sick American teenager, Kevin Davis, who used a sledge hammer to murder his own mother and later had sex with her corpse?
Kevin, 18, from Corpus Christi, Texas, will now spend the rest of his life in prison for the gruesome murder of his biological mother, Kimberley Hill, 50.
According to mirror.co.uk, our co associates Kevin confessed to the murder and admitted that he had carefully planned to kill his mother and his sister and have sex with their corpses for the first, but later changed his mind about killing his sister.
He was reported to have felt cool about the whole thing and vowed to kill again and again if he has the chance and opportunity.
A jury heard how he gave detectives the chilling details of the murder, saying he had initially tried to kill his mother with the electric cord from a games console, but when his attempt failed, he retrieved a hammer before striking her around 20 times.
Kevin told the stunned jury:
After killing her, I had sexual intercourse. Guess I lost my virginity to a dead corpse.
After the murder, Davis reportedly remained in the apartment with the intention of killing his sister when she returned home, but he decided against this and left home on a bicycle.
He boasted further:
I had my fill of killing. It seemed a little much. It would be a night to remember.
In a deeply disturbing interview, Davis told officers he had fantasised about killing his mum and sister and that he would kill again, if allowed. He described his perfect fantasy as dressing in a suit, decapitating a girl and putting her in a dress before having sex with her corpse.
Asked why he killed his mother, Davis, smiling and seeming fulfilled with himself, said he was bored with life and didn't like people.
I’m not mentally disturbed. I’m sane. I know what I did.

Nigeria 2015: How APC is Planning to Lose the Presidential Election!!!

Contrary to the view in many quarters, the 2015 Nigeria Presidential election is not about Fashola or Oshiomole or Buhari, it is about a lasting structure to build a lasting democracy, and main opposition APC style as of now, cannot defeat the ruling PDP unless EPS is adopted.
PDP requires only 25% in most the states under APC and will still keep the South-East and South-South votes to win the presidency. It is the bitter truth.
The only life line for the APC is the recommendation of the Oracle on Expanded Primary System, EPS, which will make APC a grassroots party and easily it will be able to win the presidency if the party can run away from godfather mentality of kowtowing to General Buhari and Asiwaju Tinubu, and give everyone the opportunity to grow; but what they have now can only fetch them couple of states in 2015.
The first American President George Washington told his country not to build their democracy around him but build it on institutions because a government system built around individuals will only give temporary solution, institution will take a nation up. In July President Obama delivered a speech in South Africa asking leaders in Africa to focus on three areas, Opportunities, Democracy and Peace.
EPS will provide opportunities for all politicians to grow, not the recycled leaders from the military days. With EPS the country can realize its full potentials from the pool of leaders that will emerge, and EPS will bring the lasting peace in our body politics in which tribalism and religion will be forced to play a back role. But the greatest set back to this may the ambitions of General Buhari and Asiwaju Tinubu in 2015, which is why the Oracle says, APC is planning to lose the election if EPS is not taken on the prima facie.
This is the bitter truth; think about it! What will four more years look like under President Ebele Jonathan? Not because he can do anything or effect a change, it will be for the failure of the leaders of APC to adopt a different strategy to bring the party to the grassroots of the electorates.
The Oracle is pleading with all lovers of change in 2015 to ask Buhari, Ikimi, and Tinubu to adopt EPS or prepare to watch President Jonathan’s re-election from the sidelines as he wins four more years. Those asking Buhari to be the 2015 candidate of Party without EPS must be ready to accept the verdict of the electorates when President Jonathan wins again.
If the General can win the nomination of the party through EPS nothing can stop him from winning the presidency anything beside this is failure for APC. Williams Shakespeare said in one of his plays Julius Caesar, “the eyes sees not itself except by other reflections.” APC right now is a party of the blind in the darkness, they need a generator or light to see.
Warning from the ORACLE:
The Benefits of Expanded Primary System (EPS) on Nigeria and African politics.
Expanded Primary System, EPS
The purpose of EPS is to expand the opportunity of getting all interested candidates to have a fair shot at the presidency irrespective of sex, race or religion as long as he or she can convince the electorates to vote for him or her. A prospective candidate must meet the requirement of each of the state’s electoral Board or INEC requirement in case of non-availability of state requirement like we have now, each state political party must set up a guideline on how a candidate can meet the party requirement. The Oracle is suggesting the format below however, the details and finesse of it can be worked out by the experts with the support from INEC to conduct the primary election; it would have been okay if all the parties can do it at the same time, PDP, APC and others.
To be on the ballot box to run for the office of presidency, a candidate must qualify to be on the approved register list of each state. How can a candidate get the approval? He or she must obtain at least 5000 or designated signatures of party members in the state of those in good standing with the law and a deposit of any reasonable amount to be determined by each state, a police clearance, and proof of tax payment and list of asset declaration that will be published in state or regional circulated newspapers.
The candidate must disclose all his or her financial contributors in the zone to the INEC including monthly contribution on state and national level; this is to prevent the system from being taken over by money bags. Since Nigeria is tentatively divided into six zones, West, North West, North East, South South, East and Middle Belt, the primary election will have to be conducted at the same time in all the states within each zone, while other zone will have to wait, for example if the East of Nigeria is alphabetically taken as the first zone all the states in the region, like Anambra, Imo, Abia and Enugu must conduct the primary election on the same day, another months will be selected for the primaries in the West, North West, North East, South South, and Middle Belt, meaning we can rotate between North and South until we have been able to conclude the EPS.
Each of the candidates would have campaigned in all the states in the region including holding town hall meetings, at least two debates that will involve all the candidates to sell their dreams and plans for Nigerians, for example if General Buhari, Tinubu or Okorocha want to run for presidency, all of them must register their interest with all the party offices in all the states in the East of Nigeria, they must obtain at least 5000 or designated figures from registered voters in the each state of the region to be on the ballot box.
What happen if any of them can’t get the 5000 or designated number of signatures of voters in such a state? It is simple. The affected person will not be on the approved list of those to contest in such a state in the primaries, and miss the delegates from such state, but it will not stop him for being on the national list if he wins the party ticket on the long run. Winning must be based on the approved delegates; the more state you win the more the delegates you get enables ytou to get the final nomination of the Party to be ratified at the National Convention.
The above will help to reduce proliferation of political parties in Nigeria and very soon two party systems will become an established institution, not a party structure based on individuals or godfather mentality but a lasting legacy, the same procedure will be followed by the next zone, since East had been taken as the first division for the extended primary EPS, another region presumably in the North will be taken as the next, meaning Buhari, Tinubu or Okorocha would have the same method used in the East to win delegates in the North East, and so on, until all the six zones must have participated in the choosing the candidate that will represent the party at the national presidential election.
In all, we are looking at minimum 12 debates involving all the candidates and all the citizens would have had the opportunities of asking and knowing the quality of candidates that will be running for the office of presidency. Some candidates would have dropped along the way if they are unable to gather enough delegates from one or two zones or after their lack of preparedness must have been detected by the press and the electorates in the way they answer questions or if their past revealed negative or unpatriotic attitude, this is the beauty of expanded primary system, and the electorates get to know or understand their candidates as the primary goes on.
The National Convention of the party is just a formality that will just be to ratify the results of all the zones of the federation. Can this system work in Nigeria if PDP decides not to go through the same route? This is the questions in the minds of the readers, yes. The Oracle says if APC can do this, it will give it a legitimate ground to lay a solid foundation for winning, when the party must have gone through a process of getting a sharper and better candidate, he or she will emerge and Nigerians will be properly educated on what it takes to be a leader of 160 million people and PDP will have no choice, than to follow suit. If the PDP fails to adopt similar method it will provide a better opportunity for the electorates to leave the party like bad habit and vote for APC since they plan to be relevant, the party will have to adopt EPS.
Again, the Oracle says the details of EPS is within the political parties and INEC to add flesh to this proposal and if the INEC decides to adopt this expanded primary system EPS, it will help our Democracy a lot. However it will be just okay to give a brief on the benefits to expect from this silent political revolution called EPS. With EPS we can solve Nigeria’s political problems by more than 55 percent. We will be able to eliminate aimless candidates from running for office in Nigeria again. We will be able to re-elect politicians based on performance, and religion will take the back seat, so it is with tribalism. Result will be the yardstick for winning, and godfathers may have to find another job. Our press will become the voice and opinions of the people and those with skeletons in the closets will run away from politics.
The positive effect of the process will rub off more on our judiciary, they will be too afraid to pervert justice; all our institutions will witness positive change. EPS is the silent revolution of the masses for a better society, based on accountability and result. In future when we want state and city police for security of our society it will not be stopped, when we ask for mayoral system to develop our towns and cities it will not be challenged by those who don’t have anything to offer. Nigeria’s train of progress will never be stopped again as all enemies of development will run away and our children and coming generations will be happy to call themselves Nigerians again in any part of the world as a pride to the black race. It will be a revolution that will spread to all the 55 countries in Africa.

Health Minister, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu was on Tuesday adopted by the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alongside other major stakeholders of the party from the three geo-political zones of Ebonyi State as the consensus governorship candidate of the party ahead of next year’s general election.

Prof. Chukwu’s endorsement followed a closed door stakeholders’ meeting of Ebonyi North and Central senatorial zones convened by the leader of the party, Governor Martin Elechi at the Government House, Abakaliki.

The meeting lasted more than two hours according to a source at the meeting.

The endorsement of the former Chief Medical Director of Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, laid to rest the speculation of a possible consensus candidate of the party in the 2015 election.

The Vice Chancellor stated that apart from massive renovation of hostels, his administration had restored full moral and financial support to the Students’ Union Government.

He said within the 100 days of his administration, pipe-borne water, which had been absent in the University for the past 15 years, was restored.

Ozumba equally announced that the 54th Founders’ Day lecture of the University would be presented by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

APC Commends Adeboye For Distancing Redeemed Church From Offensive Preacher

The All Progressives Congress has commended the General Overseer of the Redeem Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, for distancing his church from what it termed “offensive and divisive audio Compact Disc” currently being distributed by some alleged political Pastors.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said GO deserved to be commended for again exhibiting an exceptional leadership quality. The party said it was a display of what religion should be about, which is love, rather than hate and arson.
The statement said the party was happy that the GO was specific in his instruction to his Pastors to pay no attention to the contents of the audio CD, especially the references to political parties, including the APC.

The party said, ”The GO’s statement, in his response to the APC, which had written to protest the divisive and corrosive statements contained in the audio CD, which has been smuggled into some RCCG parishes, made it clear that the RCCG is neutral and apolitical, and that it prays for all irrespective of political persuasion or creed.
”We, in the APC are delighted at the GO’s prompt action and statement that the RCCG did not endorse divisive comments in any form or shape, that it has sons and daughters in all political parties, and that the allegations contained in the audio CD are wickedly false, unsubstantiated, ill-conceived and mischievous
”Equally satisfying is the GO’s directive asking everyone in possession of the audio CDs to return them, and the directive to the Church’s Pastors to communicate such to their respective congregations immediately.”

The Party however said it was worried that a man who calls himself a Pastor could patronize “outright lies to propagate hatred, inciting Christians against Muslims so brazenly, as if the adherents of both religions are not children of the same God.”

It faulted the cleric for using “the platform of the church to campaign for the Peoples Democratic Party while seeking to destroy the APC.”

The party added, ”In a country where the citizenry, whether Christians or Muslims, have been shortchanged by greedy, selfish and clueless political leadership, a Pastor went on record as saying President Goodluck Jonathan has performed 100%, while at the same time demonizing and denigrating the APC as an ‘Islamic Party’ without a scintilla of proof. Much as he struggled to couch his inflammatory and discordant message in flowery lies, it is clear that he was sponsored to inseminate lies to shore up the dwindling fortunes of the ruling party.
membership of an Islamic Party been populated by Christians and Muslims? Why would a Pastor whose primary purpose is to preach the Gospel (good news) now make himself available, for whatever reason, as a tool to disseminate lies and bad news?

”Had this Pastor any sense of history, he would have realized how the propagation of hatred, as he is currently doing, led to the killing of over 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutu in Rwanda in 1994. This Pastor made it seem as if the terrorists called Boko Haram are fighting the cause of Nigerian Muslims, when he knows deep down that this evil group has not spared
Muslims either.

”We have said it several times: Boko Haram is a clear and present danger to Christians as it is to Muslims. Boko Haram is as dangerous to the rich as it is to the poor; it is as dangerous to the North as it is to the South.

“Simply put, Boko Haram is an enemy of Nigeria and all Nigerians, irrespective of their religion or ethnicity, must unite to defeat the terrorists.”
DailyPost recalls that one Pastor Bosun Emmanuel had in a new audio CDs cautioned Nigerian Christians against some political parties in the country, saying that they had Islamic agenda.

Cheat Allegation For Adultery - Ini Edo In Laws Reveals Truth

ini edoSequel to Ini Edo’s post on her twitter page, confirming her marriage breakup with her husband of 5 years and her claim that she never cheated on him, the relatives of her ex-husband have responded to her claims. Some of them have openly avowed that Ini Edo was a liar and a serial cheat.
According to Nigerianfilms.com, a close family source who is related to Philip spoke to a source on the condition of anonymity:
“Ini Edo should shut up about the marriage crash because with the way she is going by trying to paint Phillip as the wrong party, we may be forced to open her can of worms and it will not be palatable to her and her career.
“I can tell you that Ini Edo is a serial cheat who played the field behind her husband’s back for the duration of their marriage. Is she going to deny she was dating one Island big boy whose girlfriend organized her friends to beat her up and injured her?”

Another family source gave his own version of her escapades thus:

“Bros, I can tell you that Ini Edo is not as innocent as she is trying to make people believe or think. We caught her on more than three occasions with three different men and she always begged us to forgive her.

“We can even mention some of the men she had affairs with including a South-South governor whose wife embarrassed her and ordered her security to send her out of the governor’s guest house in the state capital.
“She should dare us and we will mention the name of the governor on the pages of newspapers.”

Another source, a close friend of Phillip who also wishes anonymity says:

“Did she tell you how Phillip embarrassed her in front of her people when he went to collect his bride price? He told her people the kind of adulterous daughter they have and how she had been cheating on him right from the first day they were married.
“In fact, he did not want to collect the bride price but her people begged him to collect it as that would free her to get married to another man in the future.”

His words, “Mr President had interaction with WHO DG, we discussed the issue of poliomyelitis and she commended Mr. President for the leadership and effective management that had led to effective halting of the transmission of poliomyelitis in Nigeria and also containing the ebola virus outbreak. And Nigeria was well commended because Mr. President demonstrated highest level of leadership and other countries were called upon to emulate the good work of Mr President.
“You will recall that for poliomyelitis between 2013 and 2014 Nigeria was able to reduce by 95 per cent the burden in the country. Nigeria is being tipped as the next country to exit from polio endemic countries and was again commended by all countries and the leadership of Mr. President was appreciated by WHO and other countries were called upon to emulate Nigeria’s example,” he noted.
Speaking about how Nigeria can benefit from the new committee on Ebola, Ado said: “Nigeria’s role in containing the ebola outbreak in the country was well commended and other countries were called upon to emulate us. In fact one key thing that came out from the meeting between Mr. President and WHO DG was for other countries to benefit from Nigeria’s expertise in terms of containing ebola and Nigeria is going to support other countries in terms of capacity building, in terms of the emergency operation centres that we used.
“Because the emergency operation centres that we used which is the holding room arrangement which was used to contain the ebola outbreak in Nigeria. So Nigeria will be supporting other countries in terms of capacity building and human resource because already we have about 500 human resources available to assist other countries within the West African sub-region
“So what this means is that public health system in Nigeria is working and working very well. So lots of good things are happening in Nigeria and it is obvious that Nigeria is providing that leadership in the sub-region in terms of containing the Ebola virus,” Ado asserted

Obsanjo Returns Back To School

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo will today formally enrol as a graduate student at the headquarters of the National Open University of Nigeria in Lagos.
He is returning to the classroom for a higher degree in Christian Theology.
Having obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in 2009, the Owu-born high chief will now be working towards a doctorate degree, beginning first with a Masters degree.
Obasanjo told news site, Premium Times that he was going back to school because it was important for him to make some commitments towards achieving his aspirations in life.
“I’m going back to school because I need something to aspire to in every endeavour of life”, he explained
“I always aspire to something new in my farm. I do that in my international activities. I do it in my writing. I do it in the improvement of my academic work which helps to sharpen my brain and strengthen my faith.”
On combining his studies with his tight international engagements, the former Nigerian leader said he would take advantage of the flexibility of the Open University’s system.
“Fortunately, the Open University is flexible enough and I will definitely be able to cope. I was able to cope when I did the Post Graduate. I was also busy during the period”, he said.
The National Open University was initially established in 1983 but was suspended by the then military government in 1984. Obasanjo resuscitated it in 2001.
In November 2006, a few months to the end of his eight-year tenure, the then president enrolled for a post graduate diploma in Christian Theology at the university.

Rivers Government Bans Student Union Activities In RivPoly

The Rivers State government has placed a ban on all student union activities in the State’s owned Polytechnic, Bori in Khana Local Government Area.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Student Affairs, Osika Tamuno revealed this in an interview with Dailypost, following violent protest at the institution last week.

While condemning the riot by some students in the campus, Tamuno stressed that the ban would remain until investigations are concluded
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Student Affairs also dismissed rumours that a student was killed during the violent protest, where property worth millions of naira were destroyed.
Asika said: “The two ICT centres provided by TETFUND and ETF were utterly destroyed, vandalized and looted. Computers and other important property were also carted away.
“They destroyed anything they cannot carry.
“Government condemn the act in its totality and we will not rest until the perpetrators are brought to book.
“I have also established contact with the student that was rumoured had died. The said student is not dead. The police actually released him. I have talked with the student. We heard that he is in a hospital in Port Harcourt.
“Government is now sounding it loud and clear that all student related activities in the Rivers state Polytechnic be suspended until further notice.”
Following this development, some students from Rivers South-East called on the Commissioner of Police to investigate the riot at the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori.
The Rivers South East Students Association made the call with a view to avoid a negative precedence in the institution.
The Students body also commended Ogoni leaders for coming together to make a common demand for the 2015 governorship election under the Ogoni Leadership Forum.
The Coordinator of the Association, Legborsi Yamaabana said students of Rivers South-East were in support of the call on all political parties to adopt Ogoni governorship candidates for the election next year.
Similarly, an Ogoni rights activist, Celestine Akpobari has faulted the response by the police to the crisis in the State Polytechnic.
Akpobari said it was wrong for the police to use maximum force against the protesting students whom he said were not armed.
Akpobari also hinted that some concerned individuals in the state have initiated efforts to ensure justice in the matter.

Vote Out Jonathan In 2015-Ameachi Charges Rivers People

Ameachi vs Jonathan 2015
The Rivers state Governor, Rotimi Amaechi has charged the people of the state to vote against President Goodluck Jonathan if he seeks re-election in 2015.
Amaechi gave the charge particularly to the people of Kalabari when he visited Degema Local government area of the state.
He told the gathering of Kalabari people that President Jonathan was a stranger and not their brother, adding that the President should show the world what he has done in Rivers state since his assumption of office.
“The only way you can get back your oil wells is to vote out Mr. President. It is up to you, the Kalabari people, if you don’t vote out Mr. President, you know that you cannot have another Governor like me who can fight for you.
“They will put the last signature and your oil wells will be gone forever.
“Vote him out. He is not our brother. He is from Bayelsa, we are Rivers. He can only serve Bayelsa, he can not serve us.
“Let him tell us what he has done for us,” Amaechi said.
Governor Amaechi also called on the President to avoid inciting the people of Bayelsa state and Kalabari because of the Soku oil wells dispute.

Nigerian Army Arrest Boko Haram Members On Sallah

The Nigerian military in Yobe state arrested dozens of suspected Boko Haram militants who had allegedly sneaked into the state capital Potiskum to prepare attacks during Eid, a senior security source said Saturday.

“We have in the last three days made 57 arrests of suspected Boko Haram terrorists who infiltrated Potiskum in preparation for planned massive attacks during the Eid celebrations,” said the source who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media.

“They were arrested in different parts of the town and they were sent in advance, while weapons they were to use in the planned attacks were to be smuggled in later,” he said.

The traditional chief of Potiskum had to make a last-minute change in the venue of the Eid prayers because of security concerns, residents said.

The military on Friday barred residents from travelling out of the state based on fears that they could be attacked on the way. The travel lockdown prevented many residents from buying lambs or other livestock used in traditional sacrifices during the festivities.

@ 54, Nigeria boasts low-ranking varsities

The fact that no Nigerian university ranks among the top 10 in Africa should be a source of concern to all, CHARLES ABAHwrites
As Nigeria celebrates its 54th anniversary as a sovereign nation on Wednesday (tomorrow), it is not only time again to click the glasses in celebration, it is also an occasion to appraise development in every sphere of the nation’s life.
For the education sector, the evaluation will attract mixed commentaries. For instance, while government officials and their allies will give kudos to the authorities for a well-deserved journey so far, especially with significant increase in school enrolment, increased number of universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and greater private sector participation, those on the other side of the divide will point to the lapses in the sector.
The latter will easily point to the policy flip-flops, underfunding, frequent industrial actions, and the recent attacks on schools, among others, as the hallmark of the sector. According to a professor of Political Science and International Affairs scholar, Kayode Soremekun, there is not much to celebrate in the area of education as the country commemorates another independence anniversary.
He says, “I do not think that we have done well, especially in the public realm. As far as I am concerned, the public dimension of nation’s education system has collapsed. For instance, the frequent mass failures recorded in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination tell a lot about the decay at the secondary level. The country’s primary and secondary schools are no longer what they used to be.
“If you look at the university level, there is still a similar decline in standard. More alarmingly, the recent warning by the National Universities Commission Executive Secretary, Prof Julius Okojie, urging vice-chancellors to avoid creating positions for roadside professors is another pointer to the decline in the sector. Therefore, you can see that between the primary schools and the universities in the country, there is a crisis.”
Beyond Soremekun’s statement, analysts also point to the 2014 University Web rankings for African universities, saying it is not cheering news for a country that has attained the golden age. Indeed, going by the rankings, no Nigerian tertiary institution is among the top 10 universities on the continent.
Where South Africa and Egypt shine, dominating the best rankings portfolio and occupying the choicest of positions, Nigeria, the most populated black nation in the world has its best in the University of Ilorin, which occupies the 20th position in Africa. In fact, going by this year’s rankings, only 10 Nigerian universities are among the first 100 tertiary institutions on the continent.
South Africa, where apartheid regime ended in 1990, not only occupies the first position with the University of Cape Town, it also has seven other universities in the first 10-bracket table. Egypt has two – the Cairo University, Giza and the American University, Cairo – in the first 10 best ivory towers on the continent.
Some of the criteria for receiving favourable rankings are student population, university’s ability to attract foreign students, number of Nobel laureates, lecturers’ publications and international journals, web presence of the institutions as well as their capability to attract grants. Compared to several other universities abroad, many believe that Nigerian institutions clearly lag behind as far as these factors are concerned.
But some stakeholders are also quick to note that many lecturers and non-academic workers in the tertiary institutions also conduct themselves in ways that deal professionalism a big blow. In many of the institutions, there are, for instance, lecturers who rely on obsolete notes while others are so lazy and exploitative that they place premium on handouts.
Besides, analysts allege that some engage in examination malpractice, while others are adept at sexual harassment of students. Of course, some play all kinds of politics while pursuing higher degrees like the PhD. And even professorship. Analysts are thus worried that even if all infrastructure were in place, it would still be difficult if such elements were not weeded out.
So, as the popping of champagne goes on in commemoration of Independence Day, analysts want to know why a country considered to have the biggest economy on the continent is not doing well in the education sector, 54 years after. They want to know why Nigeria’s no fewer than 129 universities, comprising 40 federal, 38 state and 51 private institutions, are not receiving the best of assessment in Africa. They also bother why many Nigerians prefer the United States, United Kingdom and many neigbouring West African countries as safe havens to pursue their education.
For the Ibadan zonal Coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr. Nasir Adesola, the reasons for the poor rankings are obvious, considering the frequent strikes, inadequate funding and policy inconsistency, among others, rocking the sector.
He notes, “Sincerely, we are not faring well at all. We have not achieved the desired level of development in all the sectors. For the fact that things are still as bad, the immediate implication is that our education has not translated into the development of the country and this is a thing of concern. Within this same period, I mean 54 years of independence; many Asian nations have had beautiful turnaround in their countries. It means that we really need to sit down and look at our system again.
“What the Federal Government should do is to appraise the system and set a target for Nigerian universities to endeavour to attain a certain position in the rankings. It should focus on how to move the nation’s schools up the ladder, and not paying lip service to education.”
Indeed, last year alone, the strike called by the Academic Staff Union of the universities resulted in the shutting of the gates of the nation’s public universities for 169 days. The teachers were kicking against the non-implementation of an agreement the Federal Government signed with them in 2009, as well as the non-payment of their earned allowances.
The polytechnic system, where the President, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Mr. Chibuzo Asomugha belongs, the sub sector has not fared better, either. Though ASUP suspended its over eight months strike on compassionate ground last July, almost three months after, the Federal Government has yet to resolve the lingering issues. The same scenario plays out at the nation’s colleges of education. Teachers in the colleges have a myriad of unresolved issues to sort out with the authorities in the last 10 months.
It is not surprising, therefore, why the ASUP President also agrees with Soremekun and Adesola that it is not Uhuru yet for the sector.
Asomugha declares, “If I were to assess the nation as an examination paper, I would not give it a pass mark. Given the potential of the country, where we are after 54 years, in truth, we cannot be adjudged as progressing.”
Besides education, he believes that more needs to be done in all spheres of the nation’s life. He adds, “A cataclysmic serial leadership failure has kept the nation crawling for 54 years. All segments of society have performed within the failure range: education, defence, health, security, unity, infrastructure, youth employment, among others. It is easy to share the sentiments of certain discernible figures in society that Nigeria is more or less a failed state. Yet the potential that can turn the nation’s fortunes around abound.”
Apart from strikes, the nation’s university system, nay the entire education sector, has the problem of inadequate funding hanging on its neck like an albatross. In fact, analysts argue that since independence, the best the sector has witnessed in terms of funding is 13 per cent, which, they add, is a far distance from the United Nations Children Education Fund’s 26 per cent recommendation.
According to them, the troubled funding is at the heart of the problems besetting the sector. For them, the inadequate funding is at the source of the frequent industrial actions, dearth of infrastructure, abandoned and dilapidated buildings, lack of well-trained personnel, ineffective teaching methods, inadequate curricula and, above all, the fallen standard of education in the country.
But, proffering solution on how to alter the situation, Soremekun, a former Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State lecturer, says, “All we need to do is to go back to the basics. We need to ask ourselves what has really gone wrong. You see, the western world thrives mainly because of its knowledge structure. That knowledge structure is not yet in our country. So we need to map out our own structure.”
The ASUU helmsman Adesola agrees with Soremekun. He notes that beyond criticising the government, the union is leading other stakeholders in planning an education summit later in October as a way of addressing practically some of the salient but festering issues bogging down the nation’s education at the tertiary level.
Similarly, Asomugha believes that not all hope is lost yet. He says, “We need to muster the collective will driven by a focused and selfless leadership to maximise the depth of possibilities at our finger tips in order to develop not just the tertiary sector but also the nation at large.”
