@ 54, Nigeria boasts low-ranking varsities

The fact that no Nigerian university ranks among the top 10 in Africa should be a source of concern to all, CHARLES ABAHwrites
As Nigeria celebrates its 54th anniversary as a sovereign nation on Wednesday (tomorrow), it is not only time again to click the glasses in celebration, it is also an occasion to appraise development in every sphere of the nation’s life.
For the education sector, the evaluation will attract mixed commentaries. For instance, while government officials and their allies will give kudos to the authorities for a well-deserved journey so far, especially with significant increase in school enrolment, increased number of universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and greater private sector participation, those on the other side of the divide will point to the lapses in the sector.
The latter will easily point to the policy flip-flops, underfunding, frequent industrial actions, and the recent attacks on schools, among others, as the hallmark of the sector. According to a professor of Political Science and International Affairs scholar, Kayode Soremekun, there is not much to celebrate in the area of education as the country commemorates another independence anniversary.
He says, “I do not think that we have done well, especially in the public realm. As far as I am concerned, the public dimension of nation’s education system has collapsed. For instance, the frequent mass failures recorded in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination tell a lot about the decay at the secondary level. The country’s primary and secondary schools are no longer what they used to be.
“If you look at the university level, there is still a similar decline in standard. More alarmingly, the recent warning by the National Universities Commission Executive Secretary, Prof Julius Okojie, urging vice-chancellors to avoid creating positions for roadside professors is another pointer to the decline in the sector. Therefore, you can see that between the primary schools and the universities in the country, there is a crisis.”
Beyond Soremekun’s statement, analysts also point to the 2014 University Web rankings for African universities, saying it is not cheering news for a country that has attained the golden age. Indeed, going by the rankings, no Nigerian tertiary institution is among the top 10 universities on the continent.
Where South Africa and Egypt shine, dominating the best rankings portfolio and occupying the choicest of positions, Nigeria, the most populated black nation in the world has its best in the University of Ilorin, which occupies the 20th position in Africa. In fact, going by this year’s rankings, only 10 Nigerian universities are among the first 100 tertiary institutions on the continent.
South Africa, where apartheid regime ended in 1990, not only occupies the first position with the University of Cape Town, it also has seven other universities in the first 10-bracket table. Egypt has two – the Cairo University, Giza and the American University, Cairo – in the first 10 best ivory towers on the continent.
Some of the criteria for receiving favourable rankings are student population, university’s ability to attract foreign students, number of Nobel laureates, lecturers’ publications and international journals, web presence of the institutions as well as their capability to attract grants. Compared to several other universities abroad, many believe that Nigerian institutions clearly lag behind as far as these factors are concerned.
But some stakeholders are also quick to note that many lecturers and non-academic workers in the tertiary institutions also conduct themselves in ways that deal professionalism a big blow. In many of the institutions, there are, for instance, lecturers who rely on obsolete notes while others are so lazy and exploitative that they place premium on handouts.
Besides, analysts allege that some engage in examination malpractice, while others are adept at sexual harassment of students. Of course, some play all kinds of politics while pursuing higher degrees like the PhD. And even professorship. Analysts are thus worried that even if all infrastructure were in place, it would still be difficult if such elements were not weeded out.
So, as the popping of champagne goes on in commemoration of Independence Day, analysts want to know why a country considered to have the biggest economy on the continent is not doing well in the education sector, 54 years after. They want to know why Nigeria’s no fewer than 129 universities, comprising 40 federal, 38 state and 51 private institutions, are not receiving the best of assessment in Africa. They also bother why many Nigerians prefer the United States, United Kingdom and many neigbouring West African countries as safe havens to pursue their education.
For the Ibadan zonal Coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr. Nasir Adesola, the reasons for the poor rankings are obvious, considering the frequent strikes, inadequate funding and policy inconsistency, among others, rocking the sector.
He notes, “Sincerely, we are not faring well at all. We have not achieved the desired level of development in all the sectors. For the fact that things are still as bad, the immediate implication is that our education has not translated into the development of the country and this is a thing of concern. Within this same period, I mean 54 years of independence; many Asian nations have had beautiful turnaround in their countries. It means that we really need to sit down and look at our system again.
“What the Federal Government should do is to appraise the system and set a target for Nigerian universities to endeavour to attain a certain position in the rankings. It should focus on how to move the nation’s schools up the ladder, and not paying lip service to education.”
Indeed, last year alone, the strike called by the Academic Staff Union of the universities resulted in the shutting of the gates of the nation’s public universities for 169 days. The teachers were kicking against the non-implementation of an agreement the Federal Government signed with them in 2009, as well as the non-payment of their earned allowances.
The polytechnic system, where the President, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Mr. Chibuzo Asomugha belongs, the sub sector has not fared better, either. Though ASUP suspended its over eight months strike on compassionate ground last July, almost three months after, the Federal Government has yet to resolve the lingering issues. The same scenario plays out at the nation’s colleges of education. Teachers in the colleges have a myriad of unresolved issues to sort out with the authorities in the last 10 months.
It is not surprising, therefore, why the ASUP President also agrees with Soremekun and Adesola that it is not Uhuru yet for the sector.
Asomugha declares, “If I were to assess the nation as an examination paper, I would not give it a pass mark. Given the potential of the country, where we are after 54 years, in truth, we cannot be adjudged as progressing.”
Besides education, he believes that more needs to be done in all spheres of the nation’s life. He adds, “A cataclysmic serial leadership failure has kept the nation crawling for 54 years. All segments of society have performed within the failure range: education, defence, health, security, unity, infrastructure, youth employment, among others. It is easy to share the sentiments of certain discernible figures in society that Nigeria is more or less a failed state. Yet the potential that can turn the nation’s fortunes around abound.”
Apart from strikes, the nation’s university system, nay the entire education sector, has the problem of inadequate funding hanging on its neck like an albatross. In fact, analysts argue that since independence, the best the sector has witnessed in terms of funding is 13 per cent, which, they add, is a far distance from the United Nations Children Education Fund’s 26 per cent recommendation.
According to them, the troubled funding is at the heart of the problems besetting the sector. For them, the inadequate funding is at the source of the frequent industrial actions, dearth of infrastructure, abandoned and dilapidated buildings, lack of well-trained personnel, ineffective teaching methods, inadequate curricula and, above all, the fallen standard of education in the country.
But, proffering solution on how to alter the situation, Soremekun, a former Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State lecturer, says, “All we need to do is to go back to the basics. We need to ask ourselves what has really gone wrong. You see, the western world thrives mainly because of its knowledge structure. That knowledge structure is not yet in our country. So we need to map out our own structure.”
The ASUU helmsman Adesola agrees with Soremekun. He notes that beyond criticising the government, the union is leading other stakeholders in planning an education summit later in October as a way of addressing practically some of the salient but festering issues bogging down the nation’s education at the tertiary level.
Similarly, Asomugha believes that not all hope is lost yet. He says, “We need to muster the collective will driven by a focused and selfless leadership to maximise the depth of possibilities at our finger tips in order to develop not just the tertiary sector but also the nation at large.”

I Cant Go To Jail - Minister For Sports

The Minister of Sports, Tammy Danagogo, said he can’t go to jail following the commencement of contempt proceedings in court against Tuesday’s conduct of Nigeria Football Federation board elections in Warri.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Danagogo’s comment comes on the heels of a reported court order, which was said to have restrained the NFF and its agents from going ahead with the election.

He told NAN in Abuja that he was not served the “Form 48 contempt proceedings” to warrant him going to jail.

He said, “I can’t speak for other persons whether they are heading for jail or not, but certainly I am not heading for jail.

“In law, documentary evidence excludes oral evidence, that’s what lawyers will tell you.

“If you come and tell me now that there is a court order against me, I can say it’s a gossip or rumour.

“I should not be told about a court order, I should be served. You must read in between the lines to properly interpret and know what directives you have been given.”

The minister, who justified his earlier intervention in the NFF leadership crisis, noted that the mandatory directive by the court led to an interim leadership in July.

Danagogo added, “The last time I intervened, a mandatory directive was given by the court for the most senior civil servant in NFF to take over, so you must understand why I have to intervene then.

“I looked at the issues and said ‘please let’s obey the court order while we seek further clarification from the office of the Attorney-General and possibly see how we can set it aside’.

“At a certain point, one party said there was a court order that he should take over; the other man said no, you could not take over because FIFA did not recognise Nigerian court order.

“But at the end of the day, lawyers will interpret the order and we will get to a position where we will decide on what should be and what shouldn’t be.”

Pray to Live Up To 92years

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, said he does not wish to live longer than 92 years.
The 72 year old revered cleric said this on Sunday, while delivering the sermon at the 60th birthday of the founder and president of Living Faith Church worldwide, a.k.a Winners Chapel, Bishop Oyedepo.
In his speech, Adeboye noted that every birthday was a reminder that days of every human being were numbered.
Speaking further, he recalled that: “When I marked 70 and people prayed that I would be up to 80, I said amen. When they said I would be up 90, I said well, amen. But when they said 100, I didn’t say amen.
“I didn’t because I don’t know what offence I would have committed for God to keep me up to 100 in this sinful world when a crown of glory is awaiting me in heaven”.
The preacher, however, said he would not mind to live more than 20 years ahead.
“I wouldn’t mind to be 92 though, so that I will be alive to preach when Bishop Oyedepo is 80,” he said
“But to live up to 100, I don’t know about that”.

Orji Dedicates National Award To Abians

Gov. Theodore Orji & GEJ
Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji has dedicated the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) award conferred on him by President Goodluck Jonathan to Abians for their support to the policies and programmes of his administration.
Orji who stated this while addressing Abia Stakeholders who came to pay him homage at the Governor’s Lodge, Abuja, after the award ceremony, said he would not have accomplished much to qualify for such national honour if not for the support of the people.
He said that he had been challenged to post more legacy achievements in the state before his exit in 2015.
Governor Orji said the award which was the first to be conferred on any Abia sitting Governor, called for celebration by all Abians who have faith in Abia cause.
He also noted that more Abians for the first time received the national honours award at various categories because of his openness and magnanimity to nominate them.
Orji solicited more support of Abians in the transformation of the state as championed by his administration, vowing to leave the state better than he met it.
The Governor promised to continuously deploy the scarce resources of the state with prudence to achieve more results in the overall interest of the state
Governance is all about the people not for self aggrandizement”, he said while preaching continued unity among the people.

Lagos Offers Funding For Research On Ebola

he Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, says the government is prepared to provide funding for any research endeavour that can lead to finding a cure for the Ebola Virus Disease.

The governor, who challenged scholars in the country to move beyond earning titles to contributing meaningfully to the development of Nigeria, spoke on Monday during the disbursement of grants to 31 beneficiaries.

The beneficiaries are those whose research proposals have been approved by the Lagos State Research and Development Council.

The governor urged Prof. Maurice Iwu to come up with a lucid proposal on his Bitter Kola theory, adding that the government would be willing to sponsor it.

Ebola Virus
Fashola said, “Ph.D holders and scholars are respected not because of the finery of their titles, but because of their intelligence and what they have to offer the society. The state has taken a giant step by disbursing research grants to scientists and researchers who have proposals on what can move our society forward.

“I am curious about Prof. Maurice Iwu’s research on how Bitter Kola can help cure some diseases. I am challenging him that he should reopen the frontiers of that research and present it to us. It is something that we would be looking at.”

The governor said it was disappointing that when the country was faced with the problem of Ebola, none of the much talked about probable solutions came from Nigeria or Africa. He added that Ebola scourge presented opportunities for researchers and scholars to write their names in the book of history.

“If you look at the last epidemic challenge that we faced, all of the offers and solutions ─ ZMapp and Dan ─ among others, came from outside Africa where the problem is. And we have scientists here who carry all sorts of titles.

“This is the time to earn your titles. All the Ph.D and professors must now live up to their names. There will be no more excuses. I don’t have even masters, I am ordinary. We must know the people that have contributed to the development of our country ─ Not all these awards that are given, all these doctorates that have not really advanced our development,” he said.

Earlier, the Chairman of the state research council, Prof. Olufemi Bamiro, said the grant ranged between N3m and N5m per beneficiary.

Robbers Shoot Pastor For Pleading Not To Rape Daugther

Some armed robbers have been arrested after attacking a pastor of a pentecostal church in Abeokuta, Ogun State, shooting him on his mouth for daring to plead that his daughter should not be raped.

The gang members, include Sodiq Asimiyu (21), a.k.a. Nokia, Lekan a.k.a Goddey, Ayo a.k.a. AY, Seun Ojo a.k.a. Sepe, Kassim and Sunday.
According to reports, the gang had blocked a car driven by the Reverend at about 5.50a.m while on his way to church with his wife and daughter.

He was dispossessed of N150,000, a Samsung Galaxy tablet and HTC phone belonging to his daughter, among other items.

Not satisfied, one of the armed robbers, ordered the cleric’s daughter to move away from her parents into the church, with the intention to sexually abuse her.

The Reverend was said to have pleaded with them to spare his daughter since he had surrendered all they wanted to them.
In anger, one of the gang members pulled the trigger and shot the man in the mouth. Another member went to their operational vehicle, brought out a bottle of beer, opened it and poured the content on the man of God where he fell.

They were however arrested by the Ogun state police Command, on September 11, 2014 and are currently undergoing investigations at the Anti- Robbery section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, in Ogun State.

Olabisi Onabanjo University reopens Monday

The school was shut in August based on the orders of Governor Ibikunle Amosun after students demanded a further reduction in their school fees.

Head, Corporate Affairs Division, Vice-Chancellor’s Office of the University, Niyi Oduwole, said the reopening was based on the approval of the university’s governing council.

He announced that lectures are to start on September, 29, in continuation of the suspended 2013/2014 academic session.
According to the statement, the Students Union Government had in 2008 signed an agreement with the then state government to increase school fees by 20 per cent annually.
The official said in response to recent students demand for a 40 per cent downward review of the current fees, the state government reduced the fees by about 40 per cent and, in some cases, down to 60 per cent, as well as abolished the dichotomy between indigenes and non-indigenes.
He said the new arrangement was to start in the 2014/2015 session since there was no budgetary provision for the short fall in the current year’s financial appropriation, a stance the students protested.
The statement disclosed that students’ union government had now agreed with the university management on the fees and the commencement date of 2014/2015 session.

All returning students are expected to sign an undertaking to be of good behaviour while an investigating panel would be set up to look at the immediate and remote causes of the disturbances and suggest ways of preventing such in the future.

“It may also recommend appropriate sanctions for anyone that might have violated his matriculation oath. All returning students are to check the university website for details of fees payment guidelines for the session”, Oduwole said.

Nobody Contesting Jonathan 2015 Endorsement - Edo PDP

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State have described President Goodluck Jonathan as an exceptional leader who should be given another four years to continue his good work.
The Edo PDP Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, while speaking with newsmen in Monday in Benin, affirmed that “nobody is contesting President Jonathan’s second endorsement”, adding that, “PDP members have agreed on his performance and sincerity.”
Similarly, former PDP candidate for Edo State governorship seat, Gen. Charles Airhiavbere said the Jonathan’s contribution in area of grass-root development made him to win his way into the hearts of many PDP members and Nigerians at large
“You agree with me that when a leader brings unity and development, irrespective of the terrain and party affiliation, you will want to trust and choose him for continuation”, Airhiavbere said.
In his own view, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, the former Edo NDDC Commissioner, said “President Jonathan is not just a leader, but one who has complemented the efforts of the past administrations in the area of infrastructure development”.Read More
Also speaking, Sen. Ehigie Uzamere said, “PDP campaigned on quality of a leader, what to look at when making a choice and how to vote, for the vote to be valid.
“Jonathan stands for quality; he has performed and still performing; we are just comfortable with him for the second time.
He, however, warned against those selling their votes, adding that the choice of their leaders would determine the development in their communities.
“Do not vote for imported candidates who do not know the meaning of unity and development but somebody who knows and feels the pains of what you are in need of, or lacking like Jonathan.
“Cast your vote according to your conscience not for sentiment; and by so doing, development will extend to your door steps”, he advised.

Akwa Ibom Goes Bankrupt

The Government of Akwa Ibom state says it does not have the financial capacity to pay contractors for new projects due to the fact that it is yet to realise its projected revenue of over N400 billion.
The state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, stated this while reacting to the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) mid-year publication which indicated that the state earned the highest revenue of N135.84 billion in the first half of the year.
He said, “When you are talking about allocation of N135.84 billion, it sounds big to you, but it is not a lot of money when you are doing key projects. When you look at projects like the new international stadium, these are not bread and butter projects. These are quality projects that cost money.”
“You don’t build flyovers with N1 or N2. You don’t build underground tunnels with N2; you don’t dualise federal roads with N2; you build them with billions, so you put these monies into big projects. So, the states you are mentioning, are they able to do these types of projects?”
The commissioner also added that the N135.84 billion allocation was benign compared with the over N400 billion 2014 budget estimates of the state government which provided for 80 per cent capital expenditure and 20 per cent recurrent expenditure.
He said, “If God allows you to have something from your God-given resources, you also need to apply these resources to key infrastructure that would help turn your state around in terms of the right infrastructure, and I think Akwa Ibom has been prudent.”
“If you look at that money you are talking about, if you take 80 per cent of it, you will be talking about N80 billion and then you may be talking about N20 billion for recurrent. What will that amount to? If you juxtapose that with the budget of the state you can see that we are running a deficit.”
“If that is what we have as half year report, and we have over N400 billion as budget estimates for 2014, you can see clearly that we are running a deficit and we may not have money to pay for projects,” he added.

Atiku Declares Ambition 2015

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has declared his intention to contest the 2015 presidential elections on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Atiku made the declaration on Wednesday, 24 September, at the Yar Adua centre, Abuja, and in his speech, he harped on the struggles of being a Nigerian and the need to stand firm in the face of adversity and underdevelopment, which bedevils the country.
Here are the ten important things we learnt from Atiku’s speech.
1. Our people have refused to succumb to the despair of their hopelessness. Nigeria can be great again.
2. Some people have argued about the generational shift – I believe it is the responsibility of my generation to offer a shoulder for the youths to learn from. Nigeria should never be subjected to experimentation or learning on the job
3. I grew up as a farm boy, only child. My father was imprisoned by local authorities before he allowed me to go to school. At 11-years-old, I lost my father and my whole world fell apart. I am where I am today because i did not give up.
4. In the 20-years I spent in Nigeria public service, I built a reputation as a honest, diligent and hard-working public servant.
5. I became politically active in 1987, because my imagination was captured by the late Shehu Musa Yaradua. My politics has always been guarded by honesty, pursuit of excellence, selflessness.
6. I worked closely with my boss, Olusegun Obasanjo and we established a lot of wonderful achievements. EFCC, Telephone, Capitalisation, International influence, Blueprint for transport system and many more.
7. We have a serous governance deficit. Nigeria is on auto-pilot with no one in charge. We need a strong, competent, decisive and dynamic leadership that can solve Nigeria’s problem.
8. I have what it takes to turn Nigeria around for the better. I have a national responsibility to lead Nigeria and I have come again to answer a call to serve. It is time for change. I am a proud government of change to fix Nigeria
9. I have been asked why I am always seeking to be president, and my answer is this – My penchant for good governance is that of a man who wants to do much for Nigeria. I want to play a leading role in saving Nigeria and improving the lives of our people.
10. I want to lead a government that will invest in people. I want to lead a government that will care for all. I want to assemble the best brains in the land and jointly build the Nigeria of our dreams.

Military Nabs Abductor Of Chibok Girls

ABUJA—Almost three months after Boko Haram terrorists abducted more than 200 schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State, the military announced, yesterday, that it has arrested one of the sect’s leaders, who was one of the abductors.
This came on a day the sect members bombed a Divisional Police Headquarters in Shani Local Government Area of Borno State and also attacked an emir’s palace.
The alleged abductor of the Chibok girls, whose name was given as Babuji Ya’ari, was also said to have led the attack in which the Emir of Gwoza, Alh. Idriss Timta, was killed a few weeks ago.
The Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, disclosed in a statement issued in Abuja, yesterday, that Ya’ari doubled as member of the Youth Vigilante Group, popularly known as Civilian JTF.
According to the Defence spokesman, the Boko Haram kingpin used his membership of the civilian JTF only as a cover, as he has been coordinating deadly attacks in Borno State since 2011.
He added that the arrest of Ya’ari led to the arrest of several other Boko Haram intelligence cell members. Olukolade said that those arrested had confessed their involvement with the deadly sect and named several others who were being trailed.
The full text reads: “A terrorists’ intelligence cell headed by a businessman, who participated actively in the abduction of School Girls in Chibok has been busted by troops. The man, Babuji Ya’ari, who is also a member of the Youth Vigilante Group popularly known as Civilian JTF which he uses as cover while remaining an active terrorist, also spearheaded the murder of the Emir of Gwoza. His main role in the group is to spy and gather information for the terrorist group.
“Babuji has been coordinating several deadly attacks in Maiduguri since 2011, including the daring attacks on Customs and military locations as well as the planting of IEDs in several locations in the town.
“The arrest of the businessman, who is known to deal in tricycles has also yielded some vital information and facilitated the arrest of other members of the terrorists’ intelligence cell who are women. One of them, Hafsat Bako had earlier escaped to Gombe State to avoid suspicion but was tracked and arrested. Prior to her arrest, Hafsat coordinated the payment of other operatives on the payroll of the group. In her confession, she disclosed that a minimum of N10,000 is paid to each operative depending on the enormity of his task.
“Another female suspect named Haj Kaka, who doubles as an armourer and a spy for the terrorist group has also been arrested. Until their arrest, all the suspects actively operated a terrorists’ intelligence cell in collaboration with others still at large.
“In another development, troops deployed in Goniri, Yobe State, over the weekend, had an encounter with terrorists, resulting in casualties on both sides after the attack was successfully repelled”.
Boko Haram bomb police headquarters, attack Emir’s palace, burn houses, shops
Meanwhile, barely 24 hours after the terrorists attacked Cbibok communities in Borno State killing no fewer than 51 persons, the sect members, yesterday, invaded Shani Local Government Area of the state and bombed the Divisional Police Headquarters.
Shani is south and about 245 kilometres drive to Maiduguri which also shares boundary with some parts of Adamawa State.
The insurgents also attacked the palace of the newly appointed Emir of Shani, Alhaji Sanusi Mailafiya. The sect members were said to be hunting for the Chairman of the council, Alhaji Madu Walama, whom they believed was hiding inside the palace.
According to the residents of the community, after the heavily armed terrorists attacked the police headquarters with an Improvised Explosive Device at about 2.45pm, yesterday, they proceeded to the town and started shooting indiscriminately at people. They also set houses, shops and vehicles on fire. Many of the residents were feared dead, although casualty figure could not be ascertained.
After attacking the Emir’s palace, the terrorists were also reported to have looted a pharmaceutical store in Witambaya village before escaping into the hills of Pelambirni village bordering some communities in Adamawa State.
Another set of gunmen also reportedly attacked Mandaragirau village in Biu Local Government Area and went away with 60 cows.
A resident told Vanguard on phone that the gunmen came at about 10:00pm on Sunday and started shooting sporadically for some hours before they carted away 60 cows. No life was however lost.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Gideon Jibrin for confirmation did not yield any result, as his phone was switched off.
Jonathan condemns attack on Chibok
Meantime, President Goodluck Jonathan has called on all lovers of peace in the country to condemn efforts by agents of global terrorism to disunite and destabilize Nigeria by callously instigating violence among religious groups in the country.
Reacting to the attack on some churches in Chibok where scores of worshipers were killed, President Jonathan said he shares the view of the most learned Islamic leaders and scholars that no true Muslim will resort to the mindless killing of innocent people at any time, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, to redress any perceived grievance.
“The President deplores the renewed targeting by Boko Haram of adherents of a particular religion and urges all lovers of peace and unity to wholly condemn the renewed violence by the Boko Haram insurgents.
A statement by Reuben Abati, the Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity said: “The President believes, therefore, that Sunday’s attacks on churches and other similar atrocities by Boko Haram are conclusive proof, if any is still needed, that its leaders and members are thoroughly misguided persons who are only using religion as a cover for their reprehensible crimes against their countrymen and women.
“President Jonathan urges all Nigerians, irrespective of their religious beliefs, to resist this new attempt to undermine the nation’s firm and collective resolve to unite in full support of its armed forces and security agencies against the vicious perpetrators of brutal attacks on innocent citizens.
“The President assures all Nigerians once again that the Federal Government and national security agencies will continue to intensify ongoing efforts to end Boko Haram’s senseless attacks until the terrorists are routed and totally defeated.
“He commiserates with the families and churches that lost loved ones, members and places of worship during Sunday’s attacks” the statement concluded.
Chibok abduction won’t hinder fight against terrorism – FG
The Federal Government has also restated that it would not be deterred by the abduction of more than 200 school girls in Chibok, Borno State to fight the insurgents.
The National Coordinator of National Information Centre, Mr Mike Omeri stated this, yesterday, at the routine security briefing, alongside with spokespersons of security forces, in Abuja.
Fielding questions from journalists on why killings continue in spite of the deployment of security operatives by the government, Omeri said government was not demoralised and would not be, despite challenges it is facing to rescue the girls.
He said: “The President, security agencies, even all of us sitting here said in relation Chibok girls: The focus is to rescue them alive not attracting collateral damage or destroying the lives of those children. And therefore, the approach at rescue is different.
“Now, the Air Force even as at yesterday (Sunday) came out to fight the insurgents, where they make themselves available to be confronted. You can confirm that from Chibok and even the other week as well.
“As I said earlier, there are rules of engagement in the war, a conventional professional armed forces will stick to it, but an unconventional group or team of criminals will not stick to it.
“And don’t forget that this government have zero tolerance for abuses whether by armed forces, police or whosoever. So, we will stick to the rule of engagement and do the right thing,” he said.
Speaking on the attack in Kautikeri, kwada and Birnjuzu about 10 kilometres from Chibok, Borno state, Omeri said government had intensified patrol in the area.
He maintained that government and the community leaders were working to ascertain the extent of damage and figures, noting that there were causalities from both the security forces and the insurgents.
